![]() ![]() At this distance and beyond the projectile will become less stable and thus accuracy will become compromised. (speed of sound here is 1118 fps) At that speed the projectile is supersonic and will remain so until approximately 70 yards a which distance is (trans sonic it is at the 1.2 mach speed which is at the muzzle in this scenario ). Let's take a 22 RF round with a muzzle velocity of 1280 fps at a temperature of 60 degrees. When a bullet approaches the speed of sound it is called the trans sonic velocity, lets say 1.2 mach is the speed at which the projectile becomes unstable. The speed of sound changes as the temperature changes. Shot off a concrete bench using bipod & gamechanger. Rifle was a Savage FV-SR in a Boyd's Tacticool. CCI Velocitor was the only ammo that shot better with the can. It didn't like shooting through the can at all though. 62", worst was 1.9" but keep in mind I didn't throw out any fliers. These are 42gr bullets versus the standard 40gr. Five shot group avg without can was 1.37" but that was across 13 groups instead of five because I was having so much fun. Gemtech subsonics aren't marketed as a match ammo but were actually pretty impressive. Thought I'd also contribute some of the take-aways from my ammo testing: I've since upgraded scopes and added a 25MOA rail so that opens things up to decisions now. I didn't have a choice last time because my previous scope didn't have enough adjustment for the subsonics. I used the velocitors last time and scored an 8/10 on the 230yd TYL stage. I'm also aware that there are some unpredictable physics that come with a supersonic bullet going subsonic at range- is this more or less of an issue with rimfire? My ballistics calculator says the velocitor will go subsonic at 90yds so that's a lot of flight time to be going wonky. I'm having a hard time making up my mind because I don't have a good feel for whether the extra speed will give me an edge when making those long shots in the wind. ![]() CCI Velocitor w/ can: 1.30" avg (smallest. SK Match Rifle w/out can: 1.06" avg (smallest. I did a bunch of ammo testing today where I shot five, 5-shot groups of each ammo I tried with and without my silencerco sparrow out of my Savage FV-SR. Hey guys, shot my first NRL 22 match last weekend and I'm hooked.
